ABOUT OLETA RIVER STATE PARK:

Florida’s largest urban park, Oleta River is located on Biscayne Bay in the busy Miami metropolitan area with over 1000 acres of pristine Florida coast and finger channels. The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities and is known for miles of off-road bicycling trails, ranging from novice trails to challenging trails for experienced bicyclists. Along the Oleta River, at the north end of the park, a large stand of beautiful mangrove forest preserves native South Florida plants and wildlife. Kayakers enjoy paddling the river to explore this amazing natural area. There is swimming from Oleta River’s private 1,200-foot sandy beach.

THE CLEAN UP

Teams will need to organize a clean-up of Oleta River State Park. Each team will use one double kayak per team and one bike per team. Garbage “value” will be based on quantity and point rated on type of garbage from land and sea. Example; plastic six pack rings might be a 10 pointer, whereas paper fast food wrap might be 3 points. Kayakers will look for trash in the many finger channels at Oleta or on the out-island. Bikers will act as “scouts” for potential areas that are further from reach. Cell phones between the sub groups can work as communication for more effectively organizing the clean-up. One person from each team will act as the recorder of events by taking pictures and telling the final story of how their organized the activity.

Final points can determine winners of most garbage collected, highest point value garbage, best story of park clean up. Lot’s of fun and helps the community in the largest park in Miami.

BIKE BUILDING DONATION

The last challenge is having all the teams build a children’s bicycle while blindfolded and being coached by your teammates. The team that builds the fastest bike that passes inspection wins contest.  Bicycles will be donated to the UNITED WAY for children in need.

What a great way to have a lot of fun, build team spirit and leave a positive ‘footprint’ in the community!
